Le Canal Saint Martin

Today Michele and I traveled to an area north of Le Marais in Paris. On Sunday afternoons, the city closes down the roads along this canal because of the massive influx of people. I swear, there must of been thousands of families strolling in the 23 degree weather. It is the first nice day we have had since my arrival on Thursday.

The Canal has a series of locks that allow barges access to and from the Bassin de la Villette and the Seine. This canal is known for its iron footbridges, its tree lined quays, and other characteristics that are reminiscent of the 19th century. My guide book said that this is one of the more elegant districts of Paris.

Below is a before-and-after shot of one of the locks in action.
